Open House Night in the Life of an Assistant Principal

Since the last one was so well received and I'm too wound up to go to sleep just yet . . .

5:20 am--Alarm goes off. I really need to go to the bathroom, so I get up and come back to bed.
5:29 am--Hit snooze again.
6:12 am--Finally get up
7:09 am--Out the door with a blueberry fruit and cereal bar
8:00 am--A student seeking a schedule change arrives at my door
8:15 am--Walk the halls shooing kids to class
9:15 am--Get an email from my collegue at the other high school informing me of a staffing change; get so mad I can't see straight. Go vent to my friend Stacy.
9:30 am--Start the rebuttal email; decide to wait for the head principal to come in
9:45 am--Talk to Dave about needed car repairs and shots for Mason
10:00 am--Answer a nice parent email
12:20 pm--Go to eat lunch; realize I forgot the taco meat for my taco salad, so I just have salad
12:25 pm--Informed that one of my kids is AWOL
1:05 pm--Talk to teacher impacted by staffing change; express my anger and helplessness at the situation. I'm so angry I have a headache.
1:45 pm--Talk with principal about staffing change; she agrees to call the other principal
2:10 pm--Try to fax a letter to a mom--it goes through the third time
3:40 pm--Outside for bus duty
4:00 pm--Inside to organize and get settled; I alphabetize my hanging file folders, inserting the new typed tabs my assistant made for me
5:20 pm--Go down to eat dinner provided by the PTSA.
6:30 pm--Barely make it into the auditorium in time to be introduced. I was caught in the hallway by parents.
6:45 pm--Get ready to help hand out student schedules to parents so that they can have the room numbers to meet teachers
7:15 pm--Walk down to my Academy. Meet six sets of parents; out of 23 this is a great turn out
8:00 pm--Back down to help hand out schedules
8:15 pm--Talk with friends
8:45 pm--Get yelled at by a parent who was incited by the words of a teacher; principal escorts the mom and dad to her office (the mom was yelling)
9:05 pm--Open House is OVER--time to send parents home
9:10--Angry parent still in principal's office
9:15 pm--Help clean up
9:34 pm--Get in truck to head home; formulate this blog; am thankful that unlike Friday this is a shorter day (Friday I worked 17 hours--7:30 am to 12:15 am)
9:55 pm---Arrive home
9:57 pm--Ask Dave if there's anything funny in Devin's blog
9:58 pm--Read Devin's blog and think "At least I didn't find an old, wet diaper today."
10:00 pm--Read Yahoo email
10:13 pm--Finish this post

Still to do:
Take a shower
Pick out clothes that don't have to be ironed
Fall into bed

  1. Assistant? You have an assistant? That's really cool. I want an assistant. And what about this 17 hour work day, not to mention the one you wrote about. Are you getting paid enough?

  3. I'd rather have the old wet diaper. You're making me tired.
